Review - The Hardcore Truth

Wrestling literature is something you still find rather rarely around, especially if you want a full fledged report and not some stories that are more advertising than anything else.
Bob "Hardcore" Holly's book "The Hardcore Truth" is one of those books (or in this case rather a biography) that is not linked to the WWE and it's probably very high requirements.

Abstract:
“How do you like me now?” In the ring and behind the scenes with Hardcore Holly
Long before he became “Hardcore Holly,” Robert Howard was a fighter. From humble beginnings — a boy dominated by his disciplinarian stepfather but fueled by an unquenchable passion for pro wrestling — Bob grew up struggling to make ends meet.
As an adult with a family of his own to provide for, Bob fought in bars for money before finally following his dream of wrestling. From regional promotions all the way to the bright lights of the WWF, from false starts as Thurman “Sparky” Plugg and “Bombastic” Bob to fame as an internationally known superstar, The Hardcore Truth tells the story of Bob’s life including his 16 years working for Vince McMahon.
In this rollercoaster tale of success and frustration, replete with missed opportunities, broken promises, and a broken neck — a story of fast bikes and faster cars, lost loves and wrestling bears, bar fights and betrayal — Bob shares his uncompromised views on the present wrestling landscape with fascinating insights into the world leader in sports entertainment.

Personal Summary
In times where everyone can write things down and spread them over the internet - much like I am doing right now - we tend to forget that things written down in books don't have to be true either. Yet, The Hardcore Truth is a book that reads itself very authentically and honest, making it easy if not mandatory to believe what has been written down here.

Composed in a very clear style, you follow the life of Bob "Hardcore" Holly, from his youth and his first contact with the local wrestling scene - and how difficult it was to get a foot in the door with the almighty internet not around - over his racing career, to the days spent in WWE and afterwards.
Admittedly, as someone who finds no interest in the racing sport whatsoever, may it be cars or dirt bikes, the reading of these chapters hasn't been a blast, yet the wrestling-related as well as the more personal chapters make up for this.

Holly gives an interesting and - at least to me - unknown insight on the wrestling scene and its beginnings, as well as giving us, the readers, interesting and not well known background data about the life on tour and backstage of the biggest wrestling company in the world. Tidbits about certain coworkers, the collaboration with the office and creatives, and how drug issues, injuries, and personal tragedies are provided from the view of an insider - a view many of us fans wish to have first hand.
Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Undertacker, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, Chris Jericho... In his career, Holly had worked with many still well known athletes - and even more - and for many he has a comment or two in his book. Furthermore, important or noteworthy mile and stepping stones of Hardcore Holly's career and the wrestlers linked to them are addressed.

It was a joy reading this biography - with the small exception of the race chapters, but that's just me - and while it leaves me a bit shocked about ways to handle certain things backstage at the WWE, it was great to get this insight and educate myself a bit more about the wrestling business itself, WWE in particular, and the sacrifices the men and women are making just to provide us with an entertaining show!

Review - Elite Collection Series 23 - Cesaro

~ It's my party and I cry if I want to. ~
Well, surely not when this piece of action figurine art showed up on my presents table on my birthday! I could hardly miss it since it was the only present there... Anyways: YAY!!!

After getting rid off unnecessary wrapping paper (the shape gave away that it must be a wrestling figure, and if not Cesaro WHO ELSE???), this beauty hit my eyes - and heart. There are three actions figures of Cesaro from Ringside Collectibles out there but luckily the wonderful human being that got him for me decided for the Elite Collection Series 23! As it says on the package, only complete with flag and United States Championship! Ah, sweet memories...
Other figurines of the series include The Undertaker, John Cena (is there a series where he is not in?), Triple H, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and JBL.

After unpacking - which was astonishingly easy; Ringside Collectibles really pay attention to easy packing and the age of probably the majority of people purchasing their stuff - this amazing thing came out. He is very bend- and flexible. Elbows, shoulders, pelvis, torso, knees, feet - almost every limp can be moved freely on the figure. He wears the old white and red briefs, his high cut boots with socks in the Swiss national colours, and of course his taped thighs.

Unlike many other figures I have (that are not from the Elite Series though), Cesaro is very detailed. His signature smirk is caught almost perfectly, and he has his chest hair as well as a happy trail. Sadly, that's where details stopped, no hair on his legs and arms. His smirk though!!!

Last but not least, the United States Championship Belt. Cesaro was and still is one of the superstars that held this title the longest - in modern times - and with actual title defenses (*cough cough*). It is very flexible and detailed with the little Statue of Liberty and the eagle on the secondary plates, and it can even be adjusted in size. I tried it on my Big Show figure though, and the belt certainly does not fit around his belly...
The flag isn't made of cloth, obviously, but it's still very sturdy and fits right into Cesaro's (and other figures') hand.

All in all, a great toy, memorabilia, merchandise piece, whatever! And for fans of Cesaro a must anyway! His first WWE title and a flag he can wave as a proud Real American as well!

Review - Top Rope Tuesday "BITW" shirt

Three weeks of impatient waiting, but it's finally there: My BITW Manual shirt from Top Rope Tuesday.
The Shirt
Last time, I ordered my shirt in S, but this time I wanted it a tad bigger and so I ordered it in M; a wise choice as it seems slightly tighter than a European M. Contrary to my "Indies" shirt, the BITW shirt is made of a thinner fabric though, and the print is thinner as well if not by far as prominent as the "Indies" one. If it's the same quality as the other shirt, washing it in the machine will be no problem though. I will still be careful since the print consists of a lot narrow lines, and I really don't want them to break.
The motive looks like it could be taken out of one of your old biology books. CM Punk's very detailed silhouette in the middle is completed with diverse features that lead to a description of his most famous moves like the Anaconda Vice or the GTS. Thanks to the heading and the BITW logo it could also be taken from a more technical manual though. My favourite little detail is - of course - the Pipebomb part of the manual.
The prize had been $ 15 plus shipping, as always. Since we ordered two shirts this time (my boyfriend desperately needed one as well) the price was a bit higher this time, but incl. shipping still rather affordable, especially for a wrestling themed shirt. Ordering from WWE directly mostly means paying 30 € for the shirt alone!
The Shop
My second order from Top Rope Tuesday and sadly this time I had to wait over three weeks to finally get it. Not the shop's fault though, I completely blame Germany's customer duty for this!
I talked about the specialty of this t-shirt and merchandise ship in my last review already, but since then, a few things changed that I would like to add. While most shirts are still available for one week only, so-called "classic" shirts can be ordered for $ 19,99, slightly higher than the weekly shirts' prices (for example CM Wolverine). Other selected shirts are available for the same price at Barber Shop Window (for example Moonsault). Sadly, not all old shirts are still available via these options, but at least some can be purchased for the higher price this way. Still, it's more than highly suggested by me to purchase them while they are officially available in the shop.
Unfortunately for me, the oh so desired "Push Cesaro" shirt is neither a classic shirt, nor available at Barber Shop Window.

Review - Luchador! - A Mexican Wrestling Dice Game

Smackdown consists of Raw Rebounds only? Well, why not use the time between commercial breaks and Alberto Del Rio matches to wrestle yourself a bit? With dice!

LUCHADOR!
Mexican Wrestling Dice
The fast-rolling, hard-hitting, body-slamming, neck-crunching, chair-smashing, table-slapping dice game!

One on one? Tag team (even up to three people per team)? Or even Two on One Handicap? Everything is possible in this dice game!
You get to choose your own Mexican wrestler from two rivaling families, and determine the number of attacks, moves, pins, all by rolling the dice! But be careful, if the dice leave the ring you get counted out!

On the Board Game Convention in Essen, Germany, we had the opportunity to test this funny wrestling themed game, and even talk to the developers. Since this is wrestling, there is much space for development. Chair shots and lifts through a table can already be rolled with the dice, but for the future there could be things added like cage matches, triple threat and fatal four ways, stipulations, rivalries...!
The game is overall very closely oriented at real wrestling. Hits can be blocked or countered, you can kick out of pins or have the unfortunate honor to get another player's finishing move. You even tag in your partner by giving him a high five; but don't get too excited, maybe your opponent pulls you back into the ring!

How to play:
Both opponents roll their wrestling dice (red and blue dice) to determine hits, counters, pins, and blocks. The important thing is that the dice have to stay on the board to be valid. After counters, blocks, and hits are sorted out, the hits get rolled out (green die), and with two hits even with the stronger Luchador die (black). Pins get rolled out (yellow die) when the hits are sorted out.
Afterwards, hits get marked on the health sheet. Reaching the red areas on said sheet, the wrestler gets pinable. So either you pin your opponent or you K.O. him/her. The possibility to get out of the pin or even reverse it is there too though!
When playing in a tag team, you have to tag in your partner with a high five, rolling one of your die afterwards to see whether the pin went through. If so, your wrestler gains one health point, if not, your wrestler gets stunned and has to fight with one die less the next round, staying in the ring. The health sheet even has two sides, one for when you play one on one with more health points (21), and one for tag teams with less health points (18). In a handicap match, of course the single person gets to use the side with the more health points.

Review - Top Rope Tuesday "Indie" shirt

When I saw this shirt at Top Rope Tuesday I just couldn't resist. Shipping from the States is expensive, but still: I had to own it!!! And now, after half a month, it is finally here, my "Indies" shirt!

The Shirt:
I ordered it in S, a size that usually fits me in Europe and this shirt is only slightly bigger than what I am used to from a shirt size S. It's very comfortable to wear, thick and soft fabric, not like the low quality shirts you tend to get somewhere else. The print is white and feels a bit prominent, not smooth as I would have expected. Lets see how it will survive the first machine wash. I will surely be careful since I am a bit suspicious about the print.
The motive is some kind of homage to the punk band "The Ramones", featuring the names of Brian Danielson, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Chris Hero instead of the band members. The eagle is holding a microphone and a bat wrapped with barbed wire, sporting a "Solid Workers" lettering on the flag he holds in his beak.
The prize had been 15 $ plus shipping. All in all it was 22,50 $ for me which are roughly more than 17 €. This makes the shirt incl. shipping cheaper than many shirts over here!

The Shop:
This was my first order with Top Rope Tuesday and since I live in Europe I had to use PayPal as the method of payment. The order was placed on the 21st of August, and it got sent on the 31st of August, arriving only a few days afterwards on the 5th of September. Pretty fast for international shipping!
In general, Top Rope Tuesday is a shop that features shirts for wrestling fans (mostly WWE) that has one significant speciality: Every Tuesday (cue the name), a new shirt is revealed wich can be purchased within a week. Afterwards, the shirts will not get reprinted and wander into the Hall of Fame. Apart from the original designs and ideas, this makes these shirts really unique. If you miss a week, you have basically no chance to get the shirt. I think it is a cool idea, even though I could kick myself really hard for missing out on the "Push Cesaro" shirt!
Shipping withing the US is 2,99 $, international shipping is 7,50 $, and the shirts are always prized with 15 $, no matter if for male or female fans.

What is left for me to say is that I love... no, absolutely adore my new shirt! One thing we surely do every week from now on is check on the site to not miss out a great CM Punk design for my boyfriend or another great one for me!
